There are several main points to review in our endeavor to become cognizant of Geothermal Heat Pumps.

A geothermal heat pump is a heat pump that draws heat from the ground water, instead of air. In the winter, a geothermal heat pump transfers heat from the ground water to provide heat for our home or work space. In the summer, the heat transfer process is reversed by the ground or ground water absorbing heat from your home or work place and cools the air.

You want to become familiar with the terms SEER and HSPF. The heating and cooling functions of a heat pump each have their own measure of efficiency. A heat pump’s cooling efficiency is measured by its “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating” (SEER). Its heating efficiency is measured by its “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor” (HSPF). If you live in a cooler climate, you want to place more importance on the HSPF rating and in a warmer climate you want place more importance on the SEER rating.

Highly efficient heat pumps typically cost more than less efficient models. Calculate the higher cost with the energy savings. Look at the life expectancy vs the years it will take to break even. Look at the cost that you are paying for energy in your region. With all of these considerations, a wise decision can be made with ease.

Another consideration to make is how long you are planning to live in your current house. If you are subject to a transfer or think for some other reason you might be required to relocate, you might prefer to install a lower cost model with a lower efficiency heat pump, as you are unlikely to recoup the extra cost if your stay will be short. Money is not the only factor to consider as you may be willing to pay more to reduce your house’s impact on the environment.

The installation of a geothermal heat pump is relatively simple, however there is an enormous learning curve.  An inexperienced contractor may overlook some little details which later could cause you a lot of misery until he can figure out how to correct them.  An experienced contractor will respond promptly should you have an HVAC crisis, provide ongoing maintenance, and act as a go-between with the manufacturer and will replace failed parts under warranty.  This is very important to consider because dealing with a manufacturer can be a nightmare if you are not a dealer.
